Reporter hacked ‘almost immediately’ in Sochi

This is simply a follow-up to a statement I made in the previous post about what I’d heard second hand. I found this article on Huffington Post detailing what happened with NBC reporter Richard Engel. I personally think we should never have agreed to participate. Yes, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many athletes, but not at the risk of their lives.

Being a reporter at the Sochi Olympic Games just got even worse.

NBC News’ Richard Engel said that upon arriving in Russia to cover the upcoming event, he was hacked “almost immediately” — and privacy is not something visitors should expect to have.

“It doesn’t take long here for someone to try to tap into your laptop, cellphone or tablet,” he said Tuesday night.

Engel decided to test Russia’s privacy system with the help of American computer security expert Kyle Wilhoit, who set him up with two brand new computers and a phony identity, with fake names and addresses. When Engel connected them to the Internet in Sochi, he said he quickly received a suspicious email and was shocked when his computer was hijacked immediately after opening the email.

“In a minute, hackers were snooping around,” he said. “The same thing happened with my cellphone — it was very fast and very professional.”

Obama turns blogger to make pitch for gay rights bill

This is the link to President Obama’s blog post: Congress Needs to Pass ENDA

President Obama turned blogger on Sunday night, making an impassioned plea in the Huffington Post for Congress to pass a long-delayed measure to ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation.

The bill, called the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or ENDA, is set for a Senate vote on Monday, and proponents are upbeat about its prospects for passage.

Obama writes that while Americans can’t lose their jobs because of race, religion, gender, or disability, “in many states a person can be fired simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.”

The president continues: “It’s offensive. It’s wrong. And it needs to stop, because in the United States of America, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense.”

Artists Hack Dictionaries To Change The Definition Of Marriage

There’s a video to watch on the original story at the Huffington Post website which will be referenced below the quote. I think this is FAB!

The definition of marriage has been greatly contested by progressives who want the delineation changed from a union between a “man and woman” or “husband and wife” to a union between “two people.”

Now, a group of anonymous artists are taking matters into their own hands and literally changing the definition, one dictionary at a time.

These artists, working under the mission title “HACKmarriage,” have been going to bookstores and libraries around San Francisco and covering the formal definition of marriage with a sticker featuring an amended version, according to Animal New York.

Currently, the Oxford American Dictionary defines marriage as “the legal relationship between a husband and wife.” Merriam-Webster includes “the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage.”

Just Because He Breathes

I just read a beautiful and very tragic story about parents who lost their gay son before he reached the prime of his life and before he was able to share much of the triumphs and tragedies we all experience as each year passes into the next. I’m not going to post a bit of the article as I usually do. If you want to read it, you can find the article here. I’m also going to link to the blog Mrs Robertson maintains on this subject among the other links I have over on the side.

I hope that many people are touched by her experience and that slowly, but surely, the hatred which abounds for the LGBT community will get eaten away by those who do have a change of heart. I just hope it all happens with less tragedy and a lot more triumph.

ENDA 2013 and Transgender People

I will admit freely that I do not understand the whole transgender thing. And the very limited exposure I’ve had turned me off in a huge way because they were M-to-F and just automatically assumed I wanted a relationship when I wasn’t, even though I was single. That being said, though, I do believe they deserve the same rights and protections as the gay/lesbian community.

This is an infographic I pulled from the Huffington Post website. At the bottom I will provide the link to the accompanying story.

Weird Candy Around the World

Okay I know this isn’t typical Pink Triangle fare, but just go with the flow and enjoy!! I like to stray from the norm sometimes.

Huffington Post is, as you might guess, one of my favourite news sources. So when I saw this wonderful little link on their site about weird candy from all over the world, I just had to follow it. I try to catch as many episodes of Unwrapped as I can because they even cover the candy no longer sold as well as the brands that are made at smaller companies.

Here’s the list:

1. Salsagheti (Mexico) – watermelon strings which you cover with a packet of tamarind sauce. (available on Amazon through that link!)

2. Botan Rice Candy (Japan)

3. Shrimps & Bananas (England) – not only is the pairing questionable, but so is the flavoring of the shrimp: raspberry (allegedly).

4. High Concentrated Milk Candy (Japan)

5. Musk Flavoured Sticks (Australia) – we must remember this comes from the same country that enjoys Vegemite.

6. Devil Fruit Seed Candy (Japan) – melon soda flavored gummies with a bizarre name.

7. Black Jack Gum (England) – black licorice flavored gum

8. Everyburger (Japan) – chocolate & cookies that look like burgers.

9. Lightning Bugs Gummy Candy (China) – the candy comes with LED tongs that make the bugs light up when you grab one with the tongs.

10. Limón Salt And Lemon Pop Rocks (Spain)

11. Morinaga Hi-Chew Durian (Japan) – apparently moringa hi-chew is usually delicious with intense flavor but with durian it’s apparently not such a good thing. Read the three comments on the link to find out what durian is.

12. Orion Kočiči Jazyčky (Czech Republic) – chocolates in the shape of kitten tongues. Uh… yeah. (A Nestle product! AH!)

13. Popin’ Cookin’ Happy Sushi House (Japan)

14. Satellite Wafers (Belgium) – sometimes called Flying Saucers

15. Salty Tomato Candy  (Japan) – is it really candy if it’s salty?

16. Victory Creamy Corn Candy (Malaysia)

17. Wasabi Kit Kat (Japan) – way to ruin a classic American favorite!

18. Genghis Khan Caramel (Lamb Flavor) (Japan)

19. Toilet Candy (Japan) – can’t say this one surprises me as I know there’s a restaurant somewhere over there where your food is served in miniature toilets. No lie.

Anyone notice that the bulk of weirdness is in Japan? LOL I discovered a video series on YouTube a few months ago through a forum I’m a member of and have been completely captivated ever since. If you’re interested in seeing what #13 and #19 look like live, look for them on YouTube. rrcherry is my favorite YouTuber (??) with these kinds of videos because he doesn’t talk while recording.

Absurdly Laughable

Sue Everhart (R, GA.) needs to wake up to reality. According to an article on the Huffington Post’s website, legalizing gay marriage would cause hundreds, perhaps thousands, of straight people to pretend to be gay just so they can receive benefits. Well, Mrs. Everhart, guess what! Straight people get married for insurance purposes now. I lived with a straight couple in California for 2 years who had lived together for over twenty years and had just tied the knot mere months before I moved out there. Why? So she could be on his insurance. And there are millions of straight people on some kind of benefits deal with the Government who have no business being there.

You wanna work on people taking horrible advantage of the system, Mrs. Everhart? How about looking into the millions of people on disability for nothing more than high blood pressure, diabetes and back pain that could probably be helped if they were offered some kind of job with an employer who didn’t mind them moving about for 10 minutes once every few hours. If you need some assistance in where to find these people, I direct you to the recent series on NPR’s Planet Money on the startling rise of disability in America.
